United Way Summer Internships

2019 Summer Internships

United Way of Southwest Virginia’s Ignite Program provides our region’s high school students with a four-week summer internship component designed to teach critical workplace skills and prepare students for the workplace through hands-on work experience. Internships bridge the gap between the worlds of learning and work by connecting students and schools with employees and employers.

McKenzie B. recently graduated from John Battle High School, and will soon be joining the freshman class at Radford University this fall. She plans on majoring in Computer Science, and will already have real-world experience after completing her summer internship with Universal Fibers. When asked what she was hoping to gain from her Ignite Internship, McKenzie stated that she is eager to take the skills she learns with her moving forward.

Jules-Lemmon-1200x1200.jpgJules L., a rising senior, will be interning for Universal Fibers. She will be working specifically with global sustainability. Aside from gaining valuable experience, the work that Jules will be assisting with will leave a lasting impact. “I wanted a summer job that I would not only learn from, but one that would be meaningful. The work I assist with this summer will help produce blankets for shelter dogs,” stated Jules.

Preston-Cannon-1200x1200.jpgPreston C. is a recent high school graduate and incoming freshman at Virginia Highlands Community College. Preston will be joining the Wize Solutions team this summer as he gains intern experience in cyber security. According to Preston, he is eager to learn while on the job. Preston states that he values hands on experiences as much as time in a classroom!
