Conserving Energy Video Contest

Congratulations to Ms. Carrier and her students, Kylie D., Madison M., and Claire M.  Their video titled "Conserving Energy in our Everyday Lives" was chosen as the winner in a STEM video contest which was sponsored by the Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy. Their Deputy Director, Butch Lambert,  will make the $1,000 check presentation  to the school sometime in January.

Sadie Hawkins Dance

Due to additional school activities being held on Saturday, December 1st, the PTSA has decided to move the Sadie's Dance to Saturday, December 15th, from 7:30 - 10:00 p.m. in the school gym.

Tickets will go on sale during lunch on Monday, November 26th, through Friday, December 7th. 

If a student is bringing a guest from another school, their name and school has to be given when purchasing tickets.  No guest over the age of 19 or middle school students are allowed into the dance.

Claire M. named 2019 Distinguished Young Woman of Southwest Virginia

Claire M.Emory, Va. – Claire M.is the 2019 Distinguished Young Woman of Southwest Virginia. She earned a total of $1,400 in scholarships after the showcase for the Southwest Virginia chapter of a more than 60year-old program was held on Saturday, November 17, 2018. 

Melton took part in several workshops to prepare her for the showcase that included public speaking skills, interviewing skills and a program titled Be Your Best Self, which encourages a healthy and successful lifestyle. In addition to the $1,000 scholarship for scoring the highest in the showcase, Claire received an additional $400 in scholarships for the following categories:  Scholastic, Interview, Self Expression, and Fitness. Dayna Lafferty, of Tazewell, Virginia, earned $400 as the Talent preliminary winner, as well as first runner-up. Claire will move on to participate in the Distinguished Young Women of Virginia state finals program in February, which is located in Richmond.  There, Melton will compete against other local winners in the state for thousands more in scholarship money.  The winner of the state finals will advance to the national program in Mobile, Alabama next summer.
